20 - 26 February 2023 (week 8)
We had a nice walk around the area, checking out the signs of Spring and playing in the playgrounds.
We tried some different dehydrated fruits. They were super light so would be good to transport into space and the removal of water would inhibit bacteria growth. We had a different one each day for a snack - apples, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and chocolate ice cream.
We did some fractions themed white rose maths activities. Then we played a game of fractions bingo, matching the pictures to the fractions called out.
We did the next Mystery Science activity in our theme: Who set the first clock? We made a sun dial and experimented with a torch showing how the sun moved across the sky and how that affects the shadow on the clock. It was cloudy all week but finally on Friday afternoon there was a glimmer of sun. We lined up north on the sun dial with north on the compass and the time was accurate!
We picked out fractions from the fraction bingo cards then made them with the fraction blocks and tried to make as many equivalent fractions as we could.
We played The Last Kids on Earth themed mad libs. Vin wrote out each word for the list and then we read the story with his words. It was fun.
We read a choose your path book together with puzzles to solve about the solar system.
We did some more train like an astronaut exercises and read about the effects on bone density that can occur from being on the ISS.
Vin did some pages from a maths activity book about fractions. We got number cards from a deck of cards and used them to make 2 fractions and compare whose was largest.
We watched a couple of mini mysteries on mystery science - vin chose ‘Can any animal outrun a cheetah?’ and ‘what’s the longest anyone’s ever stayed awake?’.
Vin had a little experiment on Scratch, trying out some things and making some changes on his old projects.
We did some more pages from the fractions activities. Then we had a go at the fraction tower building activity cards. Halfway through vin decided to make domino chains instead of towers and then had a lot of fun making elaborate domino trails.
We wrote a letter to someone in the house from an inanimate object. We practiced spacing out the lines in a letter and talked about how spacing and white space can make things easier to read.
We read about astronaut Sally Ride and about how the moon and sun can cause eclipses.
Vinnie wrote a really nice entry in his book of things he enjoyed this week.
