A Cornish Adventure!

Image
Last week we went on holiday to Cornwall. On the drive there we saw Stone Henge! We got Vinnie a Numberblocks comics as he really likes the Numberblocks TV show. There were some stackable number block characters with it which he played with loads over the week! They were really great as he was naturally adding them together while he played like they do on the show. He had fun making up his own stories with them. We visited an old tin and copper mine as we were staying right near where all the old tin mining was done. We all agreed we would not want to have been miners. We found a nice playground in Penzance that Vin had a lot of fun playing in! We went on a boat across to St Michael's Mount. At low tides you can actually walk across to it. We went around the grand house on the top of the hill and Vin did the treasure trail to collect a medal at the end. The beach near where we stayed was covered in Portuguese Man-o-war. We learned they are called hydrozoids not a ...

An eclectic mix!

Image
This week has been a big mix of activities. We volunteered at the local park with some other home ed families. We walked around the park and did a bird survey. We saw lots of birds including jays, bluetits, robins and even a woodpecker. We had to listen very carefully to hear the different types of bird song. In the afternoon we did a survey at the pollination beds. We saw several types of bees. We also saw a very interesting caterpillar. We looked it up when we got home and found out it is a knotgrass moth caterpillar. There are lots of dragonflies at the park too. Vin asked to learn about ballet. We watched a short tutorial and learned about the 5 positions in ballet. We had a try at them. We watched a few videos of professional ballet and had a go at some of the jumps and twists! We practiced measuring things from a book. Vinnie decided to get a couple of cars and push them and then measure how far they had moved. We went to the library and got some different books t...

Our first week "officially" home educating!

Image
This week, Vinnie would have been due to start reception year at primary school. So that makes this our first "official" home education week! To be honest though, it was pretty much business as usual! We have joined in with a topic theme group on facebook. This month is all about Ancient Egypt. We are often outdoors too so we're going to be looking at all the Autumnal changes. Mixed in with the usual learning whims of an inquisitive 4 year old! This week Vinnie has been really keen to get a pet guinea pig! We got a book out of the library about them, learned what they eat and how to care for them. By a lucky coincidence, there was a magazine available all about pets that had some free toy guinea pigs with it. I think they may be a bit easier to care for than real ones for now! Some of the things we've done over the last week: We made a big picture with swirls on one side and stripes on the other. We froze a mini ice skating rink for some lego minifigures: ...
