We had a nice walk around the area, checking out the signs of Spring and playing in the playgrounds. We tried some different dehydrated fruits. They were super light so would be good to transport into space and the removal of water would inhibit bacteria growth. We had a different one each day for a snack - apples, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and chocolate ice cream. We did some fractions themed white rose maths activities. Then we played a game of fractions bingo, matching the pictures to the fractions called out. We did the next Mystery Science activity in our theme: Who set the first clock? We made a sun dial and experimented with a torch showing how the sun moved across the sky and how that affects the shadow on the clock. It was cloudy all week but finally on Friday afternoon there was a glimmer of sun. We lined up north on the sun dial with north on the compass and the time was accurate! We picked out fractions from the fraction bingo cards then made th...

We went to the park to play with friends for the morning on a couple of days. We practiced some times tables activities on white rose maths and played the times table heroes board game. We read some more articles about space on readworks then we looked up a bit more information about what we had seen and made a poster with a fact. Vinnie chose to draw the Hubble space telescope and write a fact about it. We read lots of books together. We threw blocks into a basket and counted up how many we got in then wrote number sentences if our total was a multiple of 2 5 or 10. We did a mystery science activity about how fast does the Earth spin. We made ourselves into models of the Earth and modelled how it turns towards and away from the sun and why the Sun arcs across the sky from east to west each day. We had a couple of goes at three minute poetry. We randomly picked 3 words out of the dictionary then set a timer for 3 minutes to make a poem out of those words. We read about what astron...

Walked to park to play in playground with friends on a few days. Bowsers fun with numbers, we read about weight. Went on a weight scavenger hunt around the house to find small heavy items and large light items and different units of measurement. We started a new mystery science unit all about space. We looked at some long exposure photos of the stars and started to think about why they leave a trail. We played a funny game where we took it in turns to write bits of a story and finish each other’s sentences but could only see the last few words of the previous person’s bit. Vin thought our story was hilarious. We did some more train like an astronaut missions and read about why astronauts have to stay fit and healthy. Walked to a different playground we’d not been to before. We did some volume themed activities on white rose maths then we experimented with the different shapes to make some predictions about which ones had higher or lower capacity and then filled them with water and...

Another bout of illness stopped us from doing many fun activities again recently. Here's some of the things we managed to do in the last 2 weeks while recovering. We went for some nice walks and played in the playground most days. For maths our theme was measuring width and length. We did the white rose maths activities then took it in turns to find objects to measure with the ruler. We flipped a coin between each turn to see if we had to find a bigger or smaller object. We kept getting tails so had to find some rather tiny objects! We rolled 2 10 sided dice to get dimensions for some mouse rooms then calculated what area of carpet they need and the perimeter for what length of grippers they’ll need. We measured a room in our house and talked about different units of measurement then we calculated the area and perimeter. We drew around Vinnie and measured how tall and wide he is and then Vinnie decorated the picture of himself. We read more articles about space. We chatted about Ha...
