15 - 21 November (week 46)

We did a bit of letterjoin practice on one day and a bit of writing during other activities on a couple of other days. Vinnie started writing his Christmas list which involved quite a lot of writing! We looked at how his writing is now and how it was not long ago and Vinnie feels proud of his achievement from working so hard at joined up writing. 


On Monday we went for a walk to look for some nuts ready for our nut themed communigrow session on Tuesday. We found some sweet chestnuts and some old beech nuts. We found lots of really cool mushrooms!




 On Tuesday we went to Communigrow. We learned a bit about the difference between fruits, drupes and nuts. Vin concentrated really well and enjoyed cracking open lots of nuts and seeds.


We also went to the library - we have changed to a different library that is near to Communigrow but is open more often and larger than the other one we've been going to. We've been waiting for months for some books at the other place whereas a week after changing libraries, there were 17 reservations waiting for us! So we had a nice time reading lots of books this week too.


Vinnie made a nice card for a friend that we saw on Wednesday. We showed them round our house as they hadn't seen it yet and a bit of the local area.

We did one of the Hey Duggee workout badges.

We read in the "School of Music" book about how music sounds different from different parts of the world. We listened to a Javan gamelan gong orchestra , the sitar player Vinnie liked again, a Kora player, and we listened to Debussy’s piano music Pagodes inspired by when he heard a gamelan at the world exhibition in Paris. As we listened, we drew pictures of what the music inspired us to think of.


We continued our Mystery Science. This week we learned about different sources of energy and how we could switch from burnable energy to alternatives. We have done half of the lesson learning about some of the alternative energy sources in some towns ready to decide what would work best for our example town. We will finish this lesson next time as there was a lot of writing so it took us a while!


We finished the week at the playground meeting up with a friend.

 This is our last week of the year before we take 3 weeks off for Christmas and New Year. Our week started with something a bit unusual - snow! We went sledging, built a snow gorilla, had snowball fights and of course, as per our theme, built snow castles! Our theme for article of the week this week is all about the lead up to the Age of Exploration. We read about the travels of Marco Polo, the methods used for navigation, the spice trade, and the new ships the Europeans started making in the Middle Ages to help them travel longer distances. We had some more fun with numbers. We practiced more adding and subtracting within 20 and tried out some different methods of making it easier when subtracting such as breaking the number down so you can get to an easier number first then subtract the rest.  A bit of a quieter week this week as we had a few family things to do. We made some lego stop motion videos. We found the youtube channel of the person from the legocon thing we watched last week and got some tips and inspiration. Then we set up our scenes and made our own. We played with lots of lego too, watched some octonauts, played some games.  We went out to a new nature area with some friends and we identified some creatures we found using google lens on the app. We think this guy is a lesser stag beetle. The first 2 strawberries from our garden were ready to eat! We also went to a wedding and Vin had fun playing with some children there.

19 - 25 June 2023 (week 25)

 This week we did some more activities about money. We practiced identifying coins and adding them up. We played Ed and Bunny go shopping. Vinnie filled in an activity sheet with lots of addition and subtraction of money. V read a couple of story books about people saving money and raising money. We also did some white rose maths activities. We did the letterbox lab experiment making a rubber band helicopter. We tried out different things to find out the best balance between size and weight of the helicopter compared to the blades.  Vinnie did some pages from his handwriting book, his comprehension activities book and his spelling practice book.  He drew some lovely fun pictures. He is very inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog at the moment so has drawn some fun scenes with the characters from the games and cartoons. We did some puzzles together.
