1 - 7 November (week 44) Bonfire night

We had a fun Halloween weekend last week - after I'd posted the blog we did some more spooky themed things including some skip counting dot to dot pictures (odd number dots and counting in tens) and Vinnie did lots of dressing up and we looked at some spooky picture books on Vooks.

During the week we read two more chapters from Frog and Toad are friends and did some activities for them. We learned about nouns and spotted some nouns in sentences then practiced andwriting by writing them out again. The other activity involved spotting punctuation at the end of sentences and then adding the correct punctuation to the ends of some sentences and a recap of nouns by circling the nouns.

We watched Lego Build to Launch mission 2. We learned about the roles of Launch Director and Flight Director for the NASA missions. We talked about autonomous vehicles and why they need them then designed and built our own lunar rover.

On the Day of the Dead we looked at pictures of ofrenda and read about day of the dead celebrations. We looked at photos of people we cared about that had died and talked about what nice memories we have of them.

We have finished our "Aiming High" theme activities so this week started a new theme of "TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More". We talked about what teams we were a part of, what it means to be in a team and how it makes us feel. (yeh vinnie drew me in the washing machine again...he thinks it's hilarious to pretend that doing laundry is my favourite hobby...)

We watched the new Numberblocks episode "About Time". Vin still has a bit of a confidence block when it comes to telling time on an analogue clock so hopefully watching the Numberblocks will have helped a little bit!

We went to a local community farm called Communigrow for their Home Ed session. We learned about different types of beetles, what their latin name means (Coleoptera - sheath or sheild, wings), we made a ladybird picture with the ladybird's life cycle inside and then we found some real beetles to look at.

Our antique ipad (well it's as old as Vinnie so it's old in ipad years!) seemed to be having an amazing week and actually loaded a handwriting app and the letterjoin website with only a few glitches so Vin had a go at using the touchscreen to practice his joined up writing for a change. We also printed out some words to practice as well on another day.

We did the next lesson from our School of Music book, it was about Jazz. We listened to some different jazz songs and noticed bits where they could have improvised and listened to the types of instruments used.

We made some jellybean cookies! Vin helped with the weighing and making the mixture.

We watched some more chain reaction videos and Vinnie made a marble run.

We visited a park we hadn't been to before in Larkfield to meet up with our friend. It was very cold! It's definitely feeling a lot more autumnal now and a lot of the trees are really losing their leaves.

We did the next experiment in Vin's letterbox lab box. We made diffraction grating glasses and looked at different coloured lights to see the colours split apart. We read about how white light is made up of all the colours of the rainbow. Black ink absorbs all the colours of light and doesn't reflect any back so you don't see any light reflected.

We made a Heat engine spinner in Mystery science. We built our spinner then conducted some experiments using a heat source to find how to make it spin best. We learned about how heat can make air move and how this principle can be used to make larger engines.

We read about fungi. We read what some of the different types are, how they grow and where they like to grow. We read a poem too. We went for a walk to find some fungi. We aimed to find 3 different types of fungi so set off towards some nearby fields. We didn't even make it that far as we found so many fungi just growing in the flower beds along the paths!

We celebrated by going to the playground instead and Vin bumped into a friend there so it worked out perfectly!

We did one of the Hey Duggee and Joe Wicks workout badge videos.

We played with Vin's halloween gift - a new puzzle game called Ghost Hunters.

We didn't have anything to make a guy with for the bonfire this year but Vin drew a spooky face (Zombie Guy Fawkes) to pin to the fire. He burned up quickly!

We went to the library and chose a few books.
