 Our theme for article of the week this week is animals of the ocean. We read about how scientists track sharks, scientists investigating the aftermath of an underwater volcanic eruption, and the different zones or layers of the ocean.

We found out some information about the Mexican celebration of Dia de los muertos. We read some facts on the National Geographic website.

We did some Into Film activities about the movie Coco. The day before we watched the film we watched the trailer and talked a bit about the plot of the film. Then on dia de los muertos we watched the film itself. Afterwards we talked about what we liked and disliked, the significance of one of the songs and other aspects about it. We drew a picture about someone who is important in our lives and the things they like.  

We did a halloween party themed maths mystery which involved practicing adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers, times tables, tally marks, rounding numbers, Roman numerals, and number bonds to 1000.

We read library books together and chatted about them.

We did the Cosmic Kids Halloween themed yoga.

At communigrow we learned about nocturnal animals. The children had a go at being bats using some echolocation to find the moths among the trees, learned about how owls can’t move their eyes but can swivel their heads, and how barn owls have their ears at different heights in their face to help them locate what they hear. Then the children made a moth attractor each to put outside and see what visitors it got.

Vin enjoyed making the next project in the Scratch for beginner’s book. He made a maze for a character to move through to get to the prize at the end.

We drew round our hands a few times and filled them with colours and patterns to represent things we are thankful for in our lives.

We watched a Spanish song on rockalingua about the day of the dead, then solved some quizzes and puzzles about it and practiced saying the phrases.

We had a recap on some of vins favourite previous School of Music lessons and then did the next lesson about the link between music and dance. We listened to various styles of dance music such as waltz, salsa, tango and Bhangra. We watched some videos of ballet and other styles of dancing. Vin likes breakdancing best!

We read about countries in Africa, looked at traditional fabrics, found out about some fruits and invented our own fruit, and had a go at a quiz. We took some street view tours of Lagos in Nigeria and some other randomly chosen roads in Africa. We looked at the different things for sale in a Moroccan Souk, drew a picture of an African elephant after watching a short video about them, listened to music from Mali and admired African art.

We looked at “Illuminated letters” and manuscripts from the Middle Ages in relation to our castles theme. Many castles would have had a chapel containing a bible that would have had to have been hand copied. We decorated our own initials to make them stand out then drew or wrote a little story or poem to go with it.

We did some PE with Joe!
