21 - 27 November 2022 (week 47)

Our theme for article of the day this week is ‘physical science’. We read about electromagnetic radiation and how scientists are still not sure why visible light is the fastest moving thing we know about, another article was about lasers, and we read about Einstein’s famous equation E=mc².

We played more number games: rolling a die each and running up and down the hallway that number of times, then comparing who rolled the greatest or least number and writing a number sentence to find the difference; drawing 3 cards between 4 and 10 from the deck and taking each card’s number away from 20 blocks, then writing each number sentence; we rolled a 10 sided dice then doubled that number and tried to throw that many cubes into a bowl. Then we added up the ones in the bowl and the ones out of the bowl to write a number sentence. We've also been doing activities from the powerpoint resources on white rose maths website for the last few weeks and using blocks and number cards to try the different quizzes.

We listened to a story in Spanish about Autumn. We looked up the words we didn’t know and then did a quiz about the story. We also listened to a song.

We brainstormed ideas for another story and vinnie wrote it.

We read a bit about how music and maths are related and listened to a bit of some of Bach’s concertos.

Vin chose the Pokémon theme cosmic kids yoga to do.

At communigrow we looked at the leaves changing colour in the hedges and talked a lot about photosynthesis and why trees lose their leaves. As we had talked about this quite a bit recently, Vin knew lots of information to answer questions and felt very proud of himself.

We read a book about simple machines and experimented with making a lever to balance different numbers of blocks. We found you can move the fulcrum so that a lighter block can lift heavier blocks. Then we made a complex machine by linking several simple machines together.

We looked at some portraits and talked about how the people are posed in them, compared some different types that had different poses eg looking at the artist or doing an activity, and compared the colours used and how that made the portrait feel different too. Then we made our own self portraits.

We read about Oceania, we looked at pictures and videos of some of the animals that are endemic to that part of the world such as kangaroos, koala and platypus. Vin drew a butterfly inspired by the ones in Papua New Guinea. We watched a couple of videos about the Great Barrier Reef and admired the coral. We looked at videos of Mount Yasur which has been constantly erupting for hundreds of years. Vin practiced using Google to look up some information and we learned to draw a kiwi bird.

We learned a bit about ways they would have invaded castles then we used some of what we had learned about levers this week to build a catapult to invade our castle. Vin wasn't happy with his first one so had another go at making one from bits from his room which worked better!
