19 - 25 September 2022 (week 38)
This week we started Vin's castles theme as well as a variety of other activities. Here are the things we did this week:
Vin helped with measuring, cutting, sanding, and drilling holes in batons of wood to make shelves for the airing cupboard.
Vin made a true or false quiz about super mario characters.
We looked at a guidebook about Leeds castle to find out how long it has been there and read about some of its previous owners. We read about the maze there and answered a quiz about it.
We did some draw along videos of a piranha plant and a raccoon in a pumpkin!
We did some experiments using special beads that changed colour in UV light. We used the UV torch and compared it to the sunlight . We checked to see if my sunglasses stopped the UV (they did) and the windows (they didn’t). Then vin tied the beads into a bracelet so he’s always ready for some UV experiments!
Vinnie helped to prepare dinner, he calculated the amount of pasta for us all, weighed it out and put it on to boil. Then chopped some broccoli and put that in a pan too.
At Communigrow the children learned about hedgerows. They learned about purposes of hedges, the types of plants that make them, and what kinds of life thrives in hedgerows. Then they all helped trim the hedge area at the field.
We visited Leeds castle. We walked through the gardens and looked at the sculpture trail, we played some mini golf, solved the maze and looked out for the things in the grotto that we’d done the quiz about, then admired the birds of prey display. We looked round the castle, watched a display about the queens that had lived in the castle over the centuries then walked round looking at it all decorated in 1930s style of one of the last owners, Lady Bailie. We looked at the outside of the castle and thought about why its current form wouldn’t have been suitable as a military fortification and how it’s more suitable as a palace or fancy house.
In the birds of prey display we saw:
African pale chanting goshawk
Red legged or crested seriema
Aplomado falcon
To be defined as a bird of prey, the bird has to kill with its feet, eat meat and have a hooked beak. The seriema did not have these features other than eating meat so was not technically a bird of prey.
We read about castles on a website and looked up what feudalism and vassals are. We also looked upsome other words we'd seen while at Leeds castle e.g we looked up what a "barbican" was. We answered a quiz about the article we had read.
We made a piece of “non-objective” artwork cutting out shapes and outlining them in different colours. As we outlined the shapes, it was fun to notice what new shapes appeared in the white space. While cutting out our shapes we wondered why hexagon and octagon aren’t hexalateral and octalateral like quadrilateral.
We practiced saying the Spanish words for colours and pointing at the right colour, then solved some anagrams and coloured in the paint splats the right colour.
Vin played some Kahoot times table games.
We drew comics based on levels in super mario sunshine .
We read Vinnie’s magazine about ancient China and did the quiz.
We played around with scratch on the computer, followed some instructions in a book as well as experimented with the sound recording and editing and then Vinnie made a dancing disco donut!
Vin played a Spanish colours game on a website matching either the English word to the correct Spanish word or the Spanish to the correct English word. The puzzle we solved the day before was very useful to refer to but by the end we were remembering some of the words without checking.
We drew a Mario Party style board game and Vinnie came up with mini games and challlenges as well as "unlucky space" consequences with Bowser!
We picked up some books from the library too. Current books:
