30 May - 12 June (weeks 22 and 23)
Last week was the Queen's jubilee celebrations so we had it as a bit of a half term holiday as there was already a couple of days off! Vinnie went bowling for the first time (and got a strike on his first go! perfect beginner's luck).
We read some information about the Queen and talked about the jubilee celebrations that were held for the silver jubilee and the diamond jubilee.
We did a yoga club too and went for a long walk (well 4 miles anyway) along some nearby fields and saw a cute bunny. Other than that, we played games and we had family round for a meal and had a good relax.
This week we read lots about honey bees. We read the page in the Exploring Nature with Children book, then found some bee themed activities and facts to do. We did some word unscrambling and labelled a diagram of a bee. We tried a quiz and I think we know quite a bit about bees!
We looked at some more information about different schools around the world. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between them. We talked about the importance of having an education and how fortunate we are to have lots of good opportunities to learn about all sorts of things because we have a computer and internet and lots of fun activities we can do.
Vin had a go at "dance mat typing". A touch typing learning game on BBC Bitesize. He found it really difficult and frustrating but after a few minutes he had already shown improvement so we talked about everything is difficult when you first try it and persevering will make it get easier over time. He didn't really enjoy it but it's a useful skill to keep trying to learn. There might be a different website that takes it a bit more gradually we can try!
We did the last couple of puzzles from Vin's Viking magazine and we built the Viking longship model. Vin cut out some pieces and asked me to tidy up the edges then we glued the model together. It was a bit fiddly!
At Communigrow this week we learned how to identify some different weeds. Plants that grow where you don't want them - e.g plants growing near your veggies stealing all the soil's nutrients - are weeds. We walked round the field spotting and digging up some weeds.
On the way home we had very lucky timing - we saw a horse and cart going into the school next door all decorated for some jubilee celebrations for the school children!
Vin played on his kahoot times table app a couple of times this week. He is a lot faster at all the games now so it has definitely helped him get more confident at remembering his times tables.
We made a volcano with the last experiment from the current letterbox lab box. Vin was absolutely not keen on touching the clay, so I created a passable volcano shape. Then Vin put sodium bicarbonate powder in the middle of it, poured some red food colouring inside. Then carefully poured the vinegar in for the eruption!
Vin chose an Andy's wild workout set in the desert so we saw some interesting desert animals.
He also chose funfair themed yoga club with pedro the penguin and practicing some poses.
We read the traditional chinese story of The Magic Paintbrush and did some puzzles and quizzes about it.
We went for a little walk and play in a playground on one day and on another visited a different playground and met up with a friend.
We played a lot with the story sacks Vin currently has from the library. We did the quizzes about the books, played the big red bath board game together, made a couple of miffy jigsaw puzzles, read a book all about how we use water in our lives, and read about the life cycles of carrots and peas. Vin played at growing a garden.
We solved the "Medieval gallery" puzzles in Vin's escape the museum puzzle book. Just one more gallery to solve and we will have escaped!
On Friday afternoon for a special treat we went and played dino golf. It was a lot of fun!
We'll pick up some new books from the library today - currently same books as last time!
