week 4! 25 - 31 January 2021 Laid back week

 This week was Vin's "Free Choice" week. This meant he could decide what activities we did and when we did them. 

There was a lot of lego building throughout the week! A lot of it inspired by the new lego mario sets or by Mario Odyssey video game. I didn't get pictures of everything but there was Bowser's airship, a Sherm possessed by Mario, vehicles for Bowser and his henchmen, the mecha-wiggler robot, a Mario party board game including dodge the hammer, bop the fuzzy and Bowser racing mini games, a mech-dinosaur, Bobomb mine, and a Thwomp ruins Lego Mario expansion.








We also played Mario Party a few times and Vin played Mario Odyssey quite a bit too! 

We played catch together, read a puzzle magazine, and lots of books and comics. Vin read quite a lot of his Thomas the Tank Engine books from his special box of them.

We made springs with paper and spirally snakes.


We made up funny stories using the story blocks.


We played one of my "Unlock!" puzzle games - "Insert Coin!". Vin really enjoyed it and was great at solving some of the puzzles.

We did a "draw-along" of the Octopus from the book Octopus Shocktopus!

We played some games on the mathseeds website - very easy ones adding and subtracting single digits! Don't want too much challenge in laid back week! 

We made fancy birthday crowns/tiaras/headbands.



We made playdough birthday cakes and icecream sundaes.



We played throw throw burrito and solved some cat crimes logic puzzles.


We also walked to the library and picked up a couple of new books. It was a fun "free choice" week and a nice rest before a slightly more "normal" week next week.

 This is our last week of the year before we take 3 weeks off for Christmas and New Year. Our week started with something a bit unusual - snow! We went sledging, built a snow gorilla, had snowball fights and of course, as per our theme, built snow castles! Our theme for article of the week this week is all about the lead up to the Age of Exploration. We read about the travels of Marco Polo, the methods used for navigation, the spice trade, and the new ships the Europeans started making in the Middle Ages to help them travel longer distances. We had some more fun with numbers. We practiced more adding and subtracting within 20 and tried out some different methods of making it easier when subtracting such as breaking the number down so you can get to an easier number first then subtract the rest. 28 June - 4 July (week 26)

 A bit of a quieter week this week as we had a few family things to do. We made some lego stop motion videos. We found the youtube channel of the person from the legocon thing we watched last week and got some tips and inspiration. Then we set up our scenes and made our own. We played with lots of lego too, watched some octonauts, played some games.  We went out to a new nature area with some friends and we identified some creatures we found using google lens on the app. We think this guy is a lesser stag beetle. The first 2 strawberries from our garden were ready to eat! We also went to a wedding and Vin had fun playing with some children there.

19 - 25 June 2023 (week 25)

 This week we did some more activities about money. We practiced identifying coins and adding them up. We played Ed and Bunny go shopping. Vinnie filled in an activity sheet with lots of addition and subtraction of money. V read a couple of story books about people saving money and raising money. We also did some white rose maths activities. We did the letterbox lab experiment making a rubber band helicopter. We tried out different things to find out the best balance between size and weight of the helicopter compared to the blades.  Vinnie did some pages from his handwriting book, his comprehension activities book and his spelling practice book.  He drew some lovely fun pictures. He is very inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog at the moment so has drawn some fun scenes with the characters from the games and cartoons. We did some puzzles together.
