Spring bees and flowers

This week we have continued with the handwriting practice sheets and working through the lift the flap Maths puzzles books. Vinnie has done so well giving a really good effort at his writing and really concentrating on getting nice clear shapes. He feels so proud of himself.

Inspired by one of the puzzles in the maths books, Vinnie chose a few items to weigh. We talked about different units of measurement and weight and Vinnie wrote down the weights of his items.

We made the other types of seeds from the Mystery science lesson about how seeds spread. They flew so well! Vin's favourite was the "spinner" seed.

We learned a little from the maths book (again!) about how some 3D shapes can be made from 2D shapes called "nets". We had a go at making our own net for a cube. We learned that spheres and donuts cannot be made from a single net.

We made the most of some sunnier days (in between the cold rain) by going to several parks, with friends and alone.

We enjoyed the page about Maps in the maths book. It inspired Vinnie to draw a map of the downstairs of our house. I added a compass for him. Vinnie put Xs on the map and we hid treasure at the places marked with an x!

At volunteering this week, we needed to remove an area of fencing and make a water-side habitat. Vinnie was helped by another volunteer who showed him how to use the fencing pliers to remove the staples from the fence posts. Vinnie did a great job helping out!

At art group, Vinnie drew a really cool picture of a volcano. It had tumbling rocks, spewing ash, lava flowing out and a cave which he added a little person inside! He also drew a lovely train and a cute dinosaur that had laid an egg.

Friday Fun at the museum was all about how toys can help us feel happy. We can cuddle teddies, or do colouring or play with trains and it makes us feel good! Vinnie coloured in a very cheerful dinosaur which he named "Mike". He signed it off with his autograph and a self portrait! (He was being Hulk).

Back at the Maths book...We got out some money and had a good look at all the different types of coins there were in British money. We did some sums adding up what the people in the cafe in the book were buying and how much change they would get. Vinnie did very well at adding up single digits.

We did a mini chemistry experiment to see how different substances mixed together. We prepared two cups of water and a small cup of squash and a small cup of oil. We made predictions of what would happen before we poured each thing into the water. Vinnie was intrigued at the way the oil sat on top of the water.

We did the next Mystery Science activity all about what to plants eat. We have put some mustard seeds in a jar to watch them sprout. Here they are on the day we put them in, and a few days later. We learned that the roots grow first, to provide the plant with water. And that when a plant is in soil, it doesn't "eat" the soil, it absorbs minerals in the soil through its roots.

We had some more fun with the maths book, learning a little about halves and quarters, a little practice with the clock to work out time and also counting up in 2s and 3s. We have covered so many different things with this one book! Vinnie has really enjoyed it. There are only a couple of pages left in it for next time but it has been a good starting point for lots of different maths related things.

We went on a visit to Emmetts Garden. We had lunch with some other home ed families there at the playground, then Vinnie wanted to go and explore the woodland and gardens. He loved it! He couldn't believe his eyes at how many bluebells there were and he loved running and finding all the most beautiful, brightest flowers he could see and spotting any bees or creatures visiting the flowers. At the end he got the skittles out of the play shed they have there and we had a game of skittles before going home. We had a really fun day.
