Spring has Sprung!

The last couple of weeks have mostly been spent doing Spring and Easter themed activities.

For World Water Day, we visited the park where they had some fun things to do. We made seed bombs out of clay, compost and mixed wildflower seeds and then planted them in the park. Vinnie and his dad also made a boat to sail in the stream. It went very well!

We decided to choose a dinner to make that none of us had ever had before. Vinnie wanted to make something from Egypt, so we looked up popular foods from Egypt and found a recipe for Hawawshi. Then we drew a picture of it and wrote it down so we would remember to buy the ingredients!

No update would be complete without some Lego creations! My favourite recent creation was this model Bowser and mariokart that Vinnie made:

We decorated some bags to use for when the Easter Bunny came to visit. We used rubber stamps with ink and some cute stickers. Vin said he loved using the stamps! He was being Captain Falcon so of course put his name on the bag ;)

We did some experiments. Or should I say eggsperiments! We soaked an egg in Vinegar for 24 hours to see what would happen. It was interesting to see after a short while there were lots of bubbles on the egg like a fizzy drink...

Vinnie made a short stop motion film using his Playmobil pirates.

When we checked on our egg the next day, the shell wiped off! The membrane inside the shell was so strong and rubbery that Vinnie even had a go bouncing the egg and it didn't split. We decided to find out if the membrane was waterproof or if liquid could get inside. We put the egg in some water with food colouring. Vinnie enjoyed mixing a couple of colours to make a good deep green shade.

Vin was a bit more keen to go to the next art group and made some more wonderful pictures. He was inspired by our trip to Blackberry Farm to draw a picture of a Highland cattle. He also drew a submarine and lots of vehicles.

Vinnie and his dad made some delicious biscotti for our Easter guests (and us of course!). Vinnie helped measure the ingredients and rolled out the mixture nicely.

The next day we checked our egg! Vinnie used a sharp knife and popped the egg open! There was quite a bit of green water inside the egg! Now we know that the water was able to soak through the egg's membrane.

We had a maths Easter egg hunt. I hid 6 eggs around the room with + and - sums on and the answers were in the egg box. Vinnie had to find an egg, do the sum and write it down and then put the egg in the correct place in the box. He loved doing this so much we did it 2 or 3 times!

Vinnie helped to make the Hawawshi by measuring the ingredients, mixing the dough and preparing some of the filling. They were fun to make and looked and tasted good too!

We got a beautiful bouquet of tulips for Easter. Of course we couldn't resist using just one for another spring experiment! We put one in coloured water - Vinnie chose blue. We will see what happens to it soon...

The park had another interesting activity - some people visited with lots of interesting information about apples. Vin enjoyed reading the facts on the sheet, he made an apple picture on a card, juiced an apple and tried some different varieties of apples, apple crisps and pear crisps. Vinnie would eat only apples if we let him so of course this was a perfect buffet for him!

We visited the local museum to do some Eastery crafts. Vinnie made an awesome bunny ears hat and of course no trip to the museum is complete without completing a quiz round the different rooms! This time all about Spring.

Vin was SO KEEN to go to the art group this week! He made 7 pictures and played with some modelling clay. All his pictures were of very cool cars this week. He also came up with some interesting ideas on his own of folding the paper and taping it down to make the shapes of the cars. I thought that was very inventive.

Our tulip had started to turn a little bit blue at the edges so we decided it was ready to be examined! We filled in a sheet about the different parts of a plant and what the parts did. Then we chopped a slice of the stem off, had a good look at it with a magnifying glass and also under the microscope. We could see that the blue water had stained the plant's xylem so they showed up a bit more clearly.

Vin also had an experiment looking at some different things under the microscope. We had a look at the knife that we had used to cut the stem and at some of his lego pieces. We also looked at our own wrinkly looking hands!

We're looking forward to doing some more Springy things!
