Vin's Learning Journey

 Vin made another Mario party board game. We wrote the next verse of the dictation poem. We played some more online games to practice some spanish words, dragging the word to the correct picture and playing memory matching games. We watched a short video about the history of castles in Britain, then we cut out some historical events and hung them on a timeline. We each chose an event in history to add to the timeline. We talked about how much has changed over different periods of history. We read about the changing colours of the leaves and talked about what we could remember about why they change. We had a go at a drawalong video to draw Ludwig von Koopa. At communigrow the children thought about what you’d find living in or near a pond. They drew pictures of some of their ideas then made food chains with them showing energy from the plant converted to energy by the plants and then eaten by successive consumers in the chain. This week we started listening to a little poem on letterjoin and writing it out. We were going to do a verse a day but managed just one! We'll try and do the other 2 next week. We looked at a story sack called ‘we’re sailing down the Nile’. The book had lots of interesting information about Egypt and the different time periods in its history. It included a fun board game with lots of ancient Egyptian trivia. We went to a workshop at the museum about their current exhibit of mechanical marvels. We looked at the different machines and automata and examined how they worked and made the different parts move and learned the names of some of the parts such as the axel, cams and cogs. Everyone had a go at making one of their own to add to the chain of powered up machines. Then they made their own mini jumping machine to take home. Vin made his look like super mario jumping on a goomba. At communigrow the children worked together to build a bug hotel. They drilled holes in bricks and logs...

 This week we started Vin's castles theme as well as a variety of other activities. Here are the things we did this week: Vin helped with measuring, cutting, sanding, and drilling holes in batons of wood to make shelves for the airing cupboard. Vin made a true or false quiz about super mario characters. We looked at a guidebook about Leeds castle to find out how long it has been there and read about some of its previous owners. We read about the maze there and answered a quiz about it. We did some draw along videos of a piranha plant and a raccoon in a pumpkin! We did some experiments using special beads that changed colour in UV light. We used the UV torch and compared it to the sunlight . We checked to see if my sunglasses stopped the UV (they did) and the windows (they didn’t). Then vin tied the beads into a bracelet so he’s always ready for some UV experiments! Vinnie helped to prepare dinner, he calculated the amount of pasta for us all, weighed it out and put it on to boil. ...
