Vin's Learning Journey

An assortment of things we have done in the last few weeks! Vin used his lego blocks that we use for maths to make a really cute lighthouse! Vin's been paying attention to how to write certain letters and because of this, when he concentrates, his writing is starting to look really smart. This is a sample from when we were doing some puzzles from a book with measuring and answers to questions. Vin drew a really cute picture of pikachu. He is really liking pokemon at the moment. We identified and drew round the different coins. We did some fun bee themed activity sheets. We bought a set to learn how to play the pokemon card game. It is great for practicing adding and subtracting in multiples of 10 and good fun too! We went to the lego store for their monthly building event. In February, we have chosen a theme about being aware of your feelings and being kind to others. Vin also chose to learn lots about numbers as he has had a sudden interest in it. We've watched videos on the BBC supermovers website which has fun videos of maths things such as number bonds and times tables. This has led to lots of time spent adding and subtracting different lego blocks and talking a lot about what adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing means and when you might use it. We've practiced counting in 2s and 5s and particularly linking 5s to telling the time. I think it's slowly starting to make sense to Vin! We've also enjoyed the Maths Quest books - like choose your own adventures but with maths puzzles to answer to go the right way. We've also talked a lot about feelings, what makes us feel different ways and how that makes us act and behave. We drew some pictures of different feelings. We talked about what things make us happy. The fun space themed activities continue! We used air dry clay to make some space creatures. We did a bit of time telling practice- astronauts have to keep track of time in space as they don't have day or night in the sane way as on Earth. We did an alien spotting sheet from a website. We made some rockets. Vin drew a cool alien. We made a space station with magnetic tiles. We watched videos about the solar eclipse and made our own solar eclipse pictures. We read about constellations and made one with marshmallows and cocktail sticks. We did the Mars diary activities from the website www.marsdiary.org. We also did activities from books such as this one (I simplified a lot of the challenges though as it is for much older children!) We made spaceships from Lego. Vin wrote a letter to Tim Peake. We went to a story making activity at the park. Vin made a picture book. We made planet cookies (they have mars bars in :D) Vin made another Rover. ...
