13 - 19 week 11

We had a very blustery walk around to see signs of spring and to play in the playground.

The maths theme this week is all about money. We did some white rose maths puzzles and activities with coins. We played some dice games, we rolled 2 20 sided dice and added them together then tried to find a couple of different ways to make that amount using coins. We also rolled one 20 sided die then picked a coin out at random and worked out how much money we would have if we had that number of that coin.

We did a mystery science called ‘why does the moon change shape?’. We stuck a skewer in a lemon (we didn’t have anything rounder to be a moon that could be skewered!) and shone a torch at it then held it just above our head and turned slowly around so the light would show the phases of the lemon.

We started the Space mysteries in time box that we’d saved for the space theme. We read the fact booklet together and did the quiz.

We made a galaxy in a jar. We used different glitter and confetti to represent the different things found in a galaxy such as stars, planets, asteroids, ice, comets, moons. We used coloured water and baby oil to make different layers and make it look a bit swirly. It was interesting to see how the different layers separated when it was shaken up.

We played pop to the shops board game.

We went to another different playground.

We read 2 books, Ed and Bunny Earn some money and Ed and Bunny spend some money. We played the Ed and Bunny go shopping board game. These were all from the Money Heroes website.

We read about the space shuttle and watched a video of one launching and one landing.

Vinnie filled in a page from his English comprehension activity book.

We wrote a maths themed poem using maths operators and words to make a poem about space. We took it in turns to add a line.

We made the scratch game ‘invasion of the donuts’ from the book together. Then we added some extra code to make it get trickier as your score increased.

We practiced drawing some cute animals and food from our ‘how to draw cute…’ books.

We read about Alan Shepherd, the first American in Space and about Neil Armstrong, the first person on the moon.

Vinnie filled in 2 pages about money in his maths activity book.

We played a game printed out where you collect coins and add up how much money you have.

We did the puzzles from the Space mystery in time magazine and Vin couldn’t wait to read the story so he has done that on his own.
