13 - 19 week 11

We had a very blustery walk around to see signs of spring and to play in the playground. The maths theme this week is all about money. We did some white rose maths puzzles and activities with coins. We played some dice games, we rolled 2 20 sided dice and added them together then tried to find a couple of different ways to make that amount using coins. We also rolled one 20 sided die then picked a coin out at random and worked out how much money we would have if we had that number of that coin. We did a mystery science called ‘why does the moon change shape?’. We stuck a skewer in a lemon (we didn’t have anything rounder to be a moon that could be skewered!) and shone a torch at it then held it just above our head and turned slowly around so the light would show the phases of the lemon. We started the Space mysteries in time box that we’d saved for the space theme. We read the fact booklet together and did the quiz. We made a galaxy in a jar. We used different glitter and confetti...

We went for a walk to the nearby playground for a play. We noticed lots of the leaf buds on the trees and plants are starting to change. Vin filled in a page of his maths practice book, giving directions to a character through a maze. Then we read some pages in his once upon a time map book, following the directions and coordinates and using the scale and key to find the right path. We did the mystery science lesson ‘why do the stars change with the seasons?’. We made a model of the earth orbiting the sun and the constellations that are visible. We finally solved the mystery of the concentric circles in our star trails anchor activity - the photo was taken looking north so the North Star in the middle does not leave a trail as the earth spins as it is always in the same place relative to Earth. We worked together to make a game called Space Tacos 🌮 from the Scratch book. Vin then had an experiment changing various things about it to see what happened. Vin practiced some handwriti...

Unwellness struck again this week , what an unlucky year so far. So our fun got a bit cut short.  We went to the playground a couple of times and admired the daffodils. We did some activities on White Rose maths about Position and direction. We found out the direction that each wall of the living room was with a compass and luckily they fell pretty near to the points of the compass. We played direction dance moves taking it in turns to call out quarter or half turns in certain directions and different dances. We did the mystery science lesson of "how can the sun tell you the season?". Then we read a readworks article about Why is it colder in the winter?  We tested our reflexes in the Train like an Astronaut mission this week, seeing how quickly we could grab a dropped ruler. With practice, our reflexes got quicker. Vin did some more position and direction puzzles from his maths practice book.  We played with the programmable robot mouse, making some mazes and planning wh...
