16 - 22 January 2023 (week 3)

 We went out for a walk each morning to check out all the changes in the nearby building sites and to do some iceskating on the puddles.

We did some quizzes from white rose maths every day and then played a game. We had a quick fire recap of number bonds finishing maths questions and picking actions to do that many times. We added up the values of 5 number playing cards and found groups that helped make it easier to add them and threw the ball (or a gorilla!) to each other that many times. We rolled two 20 sided dice and added them together then ran up and down the stairs for the number of tens and star jumps for the ones. We took turns to pick 2 dominos out of a bag then used the left side as tens and the right side as ones and practiced writing out column addition. Then did actions for the tens and ones of course! (And then Vin did 96 star jumps!)

Vinnie wrote a very nice thank you card for a Christmas gift.

We read about Space on readworks articles, our theme for the next few months is Space so we are going to read mostly space themed articles on there each week. Vinnie did some nice reading aloud each day.

We started our booklet of ‘How to train like an astronaut’ from the UK space agency. We looked at some information about the UK space agency and read about the different skills essential for an astronaut. We did some exercises to stay fit and healthy for when we go into space!

We picked up some library books for the first time this year.

We set up an experiment to show “capillary action” in plants. We wondered if the same results would occur in zero gravity for example if plants were on the ISS would it affect their ability to move water in their stems. Over the week, Vin tried some other things with the experiment to see what would happen.

We watched and joined in with Samantha Cristoforetti doing cosmic kids yoga on the International Space Station. We also watched a video of Jaime trying out some yoga moves on the special plane that astronauts go on to experience the feeling of high and low gravity.

We read a book all about what family, home and friends mean and talked about what they mean to us.

We did some astronaut training in the playground on a few days climbing up things to improve our strength and fitness.

Vin made a scratch project of a race car game. We made some modifications of our own as well and had fun racing together.

We looked up some of the programming code used for the Apollo 11 moon landing. It’s very different from scratch!

We enjoyed checking out a story sack of a museum mystery. Vin set up all the museum displays around the room and we had a nice time acting out the story as well as then vin had a lot of fun making up his own stories touring the museum exhibits.

Vin drew a cute comic about a space adventure.

He also wrote a very sweet thing that he had enjoyed about the week.
