25 - 31 October (week 43) Halloweeeeeen

We seemed to pack a lot into this week!  We practiced some more capital letter writing. Then changed our writing practice up a bit with some activities based on the book "Frog and Toad are friends" by Arnold Lobel. On one day we read the first chapter, talked about how a piece of writing has an author and a title. Then we wrote our own short stories (we chose the theme of food!).  On another day we read the next chapter, answered some questions about it and then wrote down the title, author and main characters from 3 books we had at home, trying to use our nicest joined up writing of course.  We built a little lego skull from a Lego Explorer magazine and read some of the information and activities. There were some optical illusions and quizzes.  We also started the Lego "Build to Launch" activities - we watched the mission briefing and did the first mini mission - giving each other clear detailed step by step instructions as if we were programming a robot. This week we had 2 playdates with new people! Vin did great meeting some new friends who live in our new neighbourhood.  We talked about the ways we look after ourselves. We practiced capital letters from the Letterjoin website every day this week.  We did 2 Mystery science lessons this week as Vinnie was so excited to continue them! The first lesson we watched the dominos world record for knocking the biggest domino over with smaller ones. Then we started building our own chain reaction machine. We watched some other chain reactions videos to get inspired as well as looking back at our Rube Goldberg machine diagram and figuring out the places where energy is transferred by collisions. Vin experimented with dominos and his toy cars afterwards.    The second lesson we finished our chain reaction machine and learned about how it takes a lot of attempts to get it working properly! Of course we watched even more chain reaction videos on youtube! We also found out that th...

We had some extra special activities this week. On Monday we went to Legoland! It matched our mystery science theme pretty well...we could experience first hand that energy stored = energy released = fun fun fun!  On the other days we worked on our writing of course, and updating the calendar like every week. We did the next activity in our "aiming high" activities. It involved some more games of guess the job and talking about skills and interests that would suit particular occupations. We also talked about how any one could have those skills and interests regardless of what they look like or where they're from. We had to split our mystery science this week over 2 days as it was quite a lengthy one! It involved making even more track for our bumper coaster and some hills. Once we had made it, we conducted some experiments with it. We also talked about how what we learned related to the OK Go music video from the Anchor activity. Vinnie helped to prepare a pasta salad for...
