6 - 12 September (week 36)

Each day this week we updated our calendar again.

On the Monday, it took a while to get going so we played some action games, moving around, racing in different ways - galloping, trotting, on all fours etc) to try and get in a better mood to do some writing practice.

We did writing practice every day, using some more printouts from Letter-join and, on the Friday, from an activity book about spelling, grammar and punctuation. We did a couple of pages about past and present tense, and sentence types.

We found a short piano lesson on youtube and Vin practiced playing his keyboard and having fun making up his own tunes.

We played a bird spotting game. It's a memory game using 3 part cards - one with a picture, one with a label, and one with both. You need to match up all 3 parts and then write down which bird you have spotted. Vin managed to match a lot of them so did a lot of writing practice!

A terrible fate had befallen some of Vinnie's toy sea creatures! They had somehow got frozen in a big block of ice...it was up to Vinnie to save them! First attempt was to get the hairdryer on them! It cracked the ice within seconds and started to melt it, but the sea creatures found it a bit uncomfortable. Next out came a hammer, throwing the ice chunks on the hard patio, and finally something a bit more soothing for the poor creatures - some warm water.

There is a garden spider that lives on our kitchen window that has 5 legs. It was really interesting to see this week as he moulted and grew 3 new tiny legs to replace the ones that were gone.

Vin had a go at making his own Scratch Jr animations. Amazingly, the scratch Jr software works on our antique ipad and we had a book from the library about it. Vin made a couple of ideas from the book then made some of his own. He had a lot of fun! (the ipad got VERY hot :s)

We visited the library that is near to our new house for the first time. Vinnie had a great time looking at the books and choosing way too many to bring home. As well as picking up our reservations. We had chosen several ninja themed books and Vin particularly enjoyed "So you want to be a ninja?" by Bruno Vincent.Vin has already read a lot of the books we borrowed as we've spent some time reading.

We did an activity from Mystery Science. It was about how your physical traits might change depending on your environment. Specifically, what would change if you spent a year in space. It was really interesting and Vin came up with some great theories and wrote them down very nicely.

We played the board game "Dungeon!". You have to defeat monsters to get treasure. Each treasure is worth a different value and you need to try and get 10,000 gold worth of treasure and then escape. Vin did great adding up his treasure and beat me by a mile.

We went for a long walk to see some woods that are nearby and try out a new playground at the other end of the Village. We spotted lots more seeds too, as well as some butterflies, and some huge rosehips!

We made a secret ninja den and did some spying...

We made a poster to learn to count to 10 in japanese. We drew the right number of objects for each number. We looked up some popular Japanese things to draw. Once we'd finished our posters, we practiced counting by playing hide and seek and counting to 10 in japanese.

Vinnie copied out a poem for his Nature Journal called "Hurt no Living Thing" by Christina Rossetti. He did it over 2 days.
