12 - 18 July (week 28)

We have been lucky to have beautiful weather this week so have made the most of it with several trips out to nearby parks and to explore. We've played football and basketball at the court near us, taken Vin's skateboard out to practice as well as his go kart and the bikes on other days.

While out we have been spotting interesting plants and using google lens app to try and identify them. We saw some pretty flowering trees that turned out to be small leaved limes (but not lime trees that grow limes!) and a bush that had leaves a bit like holly and bright blue berries which google told us was a mahonia aquafolium. It said the berries were edible but very tart so we gave them a miss!

We got a new board game this week called Times tables heroes. It was fun to play and Vin enjoyed coming up with unique ways for the superheroes to save the day!

We've also been caring for our garden, making sure the plants have enough water, removing some of the weeds and we've had a few strawberries and rasberries to eat! We've been knocking the ants and aphids off the fruit and veg plants when we see them and they've not been quite so overwhelming now but we left a very large weed in the garden and have let the ants have that and it Vin found it very interesting to watch the ants farming the aphids in huge numbers on there! The bean plants have been flowering and some little beans are starting to grow too.

Vin has been enjoying the "Discovery Tour" mode of the game Assassin's Creed Odyssey. He has been visiting landmarks in Ancient Greece and learning some interesting facts and doing quizzes set by famous Greek historical figures. He also just likes running around and barging into people!

We've been building quite a few lego sets this week as well as reading some of Vin's old lego comics and doing the puzzles. The special set of bricks Vin so carefully ordered arrived too so he was very pleased to build the large "safe" that he bought bricks to make. Then he had fun getting the joker to steal it and batman had to stop him! We also used the Brickit app to scan a big load of Vin's bricks and he chose something from that to build too and then added to
and modified it.

We talked about the Artemis moon landing program and how in the Greek gods Artemis was the twin of Apollo, which is what the original moon missions were called.

Vin played a bit of Mario Kart tour and was carefully calculating how many coins he still needed to win in the races to be able to buy the car he wanted to get.

We played the Escape the room game "Mystery at Stargazers Manor" which was really fun to play as a family and a great level of difficulty for Vin to enjoy as it wasn't too tricky so he was able to solve most of the puzzles and felt very proud of himself!

Vin has also been making notes of a few of the things he has enjoyed in his special note book (with a bit of persuasion - I think it will be nice for him to look back on whereas he's not that bothered to do it!). I find particularly with writing for Vin, it is very true that being motivated to learn something and enjoying doing that thing is the only way to make anything stick with learning. Vin spent all that time being encouraged and scheduled into practicing writing and getting the letters nice sizes and being reminded constantly to write small letters in words and capitals for names or start of sentences and both of us being rather frustrated by all this reminding and practicing. But when he isn't being constantly reminded, he immediately goes back to doing it his old way so it clearly hasn't "stuck". I think for both our sakes it is better to just wait until he naturally wants to do so and then he will have his own motivation to learn and practice, being constantly reminded is enough to put someone off for even longer! Maybe he'll be a doctor! He has been typing a bit more on the computer recently too as he has wanted to look up some lego things so I have asked him to do the typing when we search for stuff. Below pictures are the 2 neater writing ones! I suggested perhaps he could at least try writing on the lines for these ones !

Books this week as per last update. We've enjoyed reading them a lot so far! I've particularly liked "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan and Vin quite liked the Explosive Life of Scarlett Fife by Maz Evans.
