9 - 15 May 2021 (Week 19) So much exploring...
This week we've been out every morning to explore the new place we live.
We've found woods, an orchard, intriguing pathways, about 8 playgrounds, bluebells, blossoms on trees and bushes, a field full of buttercups, several patches of wild strawberries, loads of daisies, and more pretty things to spot! We spotted lots of tiny snails after it had rained.
We made a little play cafe. We wrote a menu and chose some foods to make and used the toy money for the customers to pay with. It seems a lot of the customers seemed to order "off-menu" though..and wear their meals?
Vin did his 3 minutes writing every day, he is continuing to practice joined up writing and is doing very well.
We had a bit of a "hungry caterpillar" theme for a couple of days. We spotted some leaves on hedges that had been chewed by caterpillars but we couldn't see any real ones. We read the book of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. While we read it, Vin drew the caterpillar's life cycle. We also added up how many different foods the caterpillar had eaten by each day of the week.
We made caterpillars and a chrysalis using pompoms, double sided tape and colouring pens. Then we made wings for them with kitchen roll. We mixed food colouring in water and used pipettes to drip pretty colours over the wings. (it's added the photos in reverse order!)
We had a "hungry caterpillar " themed afternoon snack. Vin helped chop up the fruits that the caterpillar had eaten in the story. The shop didn't have any strawberries so we substituted for strawberry laces sweets.
We read the magazine from Vin’s Ancient Greece mysteries in time box and Vin also showed me some pages from the “See Inside Ancient Greece” Usborne book that he has to show me similar things in there.
Vin had a go at a few sheets I’d printed out from emails we subscribe to from Usborne and Banjo Robinson. There was a dot to dot, encoded message and also we had to match capital cities with their countries. We used google maps to look up the countries and had a look on the “street view” to see what the cities were like.
We did the next Mystery Science lesson in our current unit. It was about how to deal with a town that had too many mosquitos. Vin did some great joined up writing practice too.
We saw some friends at the playground on Wednesday. We also baked a cake using a tin that we unpacked. Vin's getting pretty good at cracking eggs now.
We had a bit of practical maths on one of our walks. The area we walked in had lots of the bumpy paving near each road. We counted up how many tiles were used at each crossing by counting the rows and columns and using times tables to figure out the total. One crossing had 110 tiles on one side! We found several ways to figure it out including counting in 5s while jumping along the rows, working out what 5 x 20 would be then adding on 5 x 2, or remembering that even numbers x 5 end in 0 and 5 is half of 10 so half of 22 tens is 11 tens.We found a statue commemorating the airmen who served from West Malling airfield in WW2.
We watched a video about plants and started our Bean Plant Diary by making an equipment list and finding out what plants need to grow. We will get the things we need in the next week or two so we can start growing some bean plants soon.
We read the book "365 Penguins" which Vin really enjoyed (and has read 3 or 4 times already!). We talked about the months of the year and ways they could arrange all those penguins.
We played with the code and go robot mouse and made up some fun mazes to solve.
Vin enjoyed playing with his old Wind Up Bus book and spotting the landmarks around London. We looked some of them up on the phone to see what they were like in real life.
Vin also did a couple of maths puzzle sheets independently. Usually we do this sort of thing together but I want him to start gaining a bit of confidence to give things a try on his own. We did the first one on each sheet together then I left him to try on his own. He did really well.
