2021 February 7 - 12 Week 6 Chinese new year, Valentine's Day, Elizabethans
This week Vinnie continued his 2 minutes of writing each day. He wrote a couple of great sentences, and the alphabet and a list of some characters from Mario Odyssey.
We got our next "Time Machine" from Mysteries in Time. This month's theme is the Elizabethans. Throughout the week we read the mystery story, put the sticker on the timeline poster and found London on the World Map. We built the model of the Tower of London and Vinnie got some little lego studs to be people so he could play with it. We also started reading the facts magazine which led to a lot of chatting about what it might have been like all those years ago and a bit of mental maths calculating the lengths of the reign of each of the six Tudor Kings and Queens. We shall continue reading the magazine next week and learn a bit more.
We played in the snow on a few days, Vin made a "Mount Crumpet" for the Grinch. The real Grinch was a bit big for it so he got a leaf and made a little model grinch. He used a cut off piece of hose he found to hollow out a little cave. We went sledging too and had fun with the snow and ice while out walking.
We played board games on a couple of days - we played Rush Hour and connect 4 quite a lot of times.
Vin did quite a bit of colouring and drawing. He made a fancy drawing that had lift the flap bits on it which was pretty clever!
Vin did a few puzzles from his comics and magazines. He liked this one where you had to fit the words into the grid. And the crosswords as well.
We watched BBC Super Movers videos on several days. We watched ones about feelings, adjectives and adverbs, apostrophes, fractions, and telling the time. Vin wrote a couple of sentences to practice using adjectives, adverbs and apostrophes. (The next day his 2 minutes writing sentence had an apostrophe in it too!)
Vin played maths games on the Prodigy maths website a couple of days this week. He quite liked it so we shall play it some more next week.
We did 2 of the Cosmic Kids Yoga Quest adventures. Joybob the Polar Bear and Frozen. We talked about how nice it is to do good things for other people. Vin says he finds Frozen scary still.
We walked to the library twice, once to drop off books and once to pick up a load of reservations so we have lots of nice new books to read.
The mystery science "Animals through history" theme continued this week. We learned about selection, how humans have changed animals over generations by choosing to breed the animals with the traits we want for example cows that produce more milk, stronger cows for farm work, and different breeds of dogs. We did a quiz to figure out what types of dogs different breeds would make. We also read about an experiment in Russia to tame foxes to be domesticated like dogs too.
We made Valentine's cards too and also watched a video about Chinese New year and answered a quiz. This year will be the year of the Ox on the Chinese calendar.
We read loads of library books together and Vin "helped" with the hoovering quite a lot this week...And I forgot to take very many pictures* but we had fun anyway!
*Well I took a lot of photos of birds outside but forgot to take many of what we were up to!
