2 - 22 March - The start of Coronavirus COVID-19 lock down

At the start of this month we had some lovely trips out, but this past week the coronavirus has meant we have had to stay at home. This may go on for a while. Luckily there are so many amazing companies and individuals putting on activities online for the children that have had to stay home from school as well as the usual home educators like us. These are very unusual times but we will be making the most of time indoors to learn new skills and enjoy our garden too. We can't go out to playgrounds or meet up with friends so we will have to find other ways to keep busy and active.

In the first week of March we went to Crowborough ghyll and traipsed through so much deep mud! We got to a playground at the end and Vin had fun with his friends.

The star wars lego guys had some trouble parkig their spaceships! Only ships that were 2 different colours and 10 blocks long were allowed in the imperial spaceship park! Luckily Vin figured out the numbers to match up to 10 so they could all land.

We chatted about nouns, verbs, pronouns and adjectives and practiced writing some sentences for each other where we had to spot the different types of words.

We visited the Science Museum in London with our family, Vinnie's auntie and uncle and cousins. We had a lot of fun looking at all the exhibits, and vinnie had fun running around lots too.

The next day they all went on a plane back home and we played a game on the computer "Let's explore the airport" so we could find out what they would be doing.

We did another page of stickers in our book about birds, we looked up woodpigeons, wrens and greater spotted woodpeckers on the RSPB website and watched videos of them and listened to their calls.

We read lots of library books - a book about the seasons from the series "Boom science", a book about the chinese new year, and learned about co-ordinates and symmetry from the animal maths book.

We started the "Weather watchers" topic on Mystery science. We did the first lesson and spent some time looking out the window and drew a picture of today's weather. We compared to a couple of years ago when we did this lesson before! We have a subscription now with a home ed group so we will be able to do all the lessons that were locked before.

Over these few weeks we did lots of activities and talking about our feelings and emotions and nice ways to behave and look after ourselves when we feel angry. We read the book about "How are you feeling" by Molly Potter.

We did some cosmic kids mindfulness, on quite a few days we did cosmic kids yoga adventures as well as the super yoga, yoga disco and other videos.

We did some jigsaws.

We watched a "mathantics" video on youtube about place value then played a place value game I printed off.

We did some activities from Vin's Maps activity book. Vin chose to learn about the Czech republic and the Netherlands. There was a really tricky sudoku that Vin did a great job working out with a bit of help! We found it was easier to assign numbers rather than the flowers as they were a bit tricky to draw accurately!

We've had a few dance parties - trying to use up lots of energy when there's not so many places to go out to! The 10 minute take over on radio 1 is a favourite of Vin's to have a dance party to start the day.

We learned about Multiplication and division in the STEM quest library book we have. We practiced multiplying larger numbers. Then we watched some fun 3 times table videos on youtube and tried singing along.

We made up a game, rolled 2 dice and add them together. Then do that number times 3. We wrote down our answers and used the blocks to help us count in 3s.

Vin's done loads and loads of drawing recently. He's really enjoying coming up with his own drawings as well as drawing things from books and games.

Each day we continued the weather topic on Mystery science - there were 6 lessons plus some extra activities. We had some great weather for weather watching on some days with the weather changing from sun, to cloud, to high winds to hail in the space of 10 minutes!

We went nature spotting at the park.

We started making the Nintendo Labo robot that Vin got for Christmas.
We made chocolate chip cookies.

I printed off some activities from Twinkl as they kindly made a month free because so many people are stuck at home now.
We sorted some pictures into friendly and unfriendly ways to treat people. We chatted about each one and tried to think of times we'd seen or experienced some of the behaviours.

We found a draw-along video by the illustrator of a book Vin likes called "The nothing to see here hotel". Steven lenton has made several how-to videos and we chose to draw Prince Grogbah. Afterwards, Vin added some of his own details to the picture.

We printed out a "Maths mystery" from Twinkl. It's a story with a mystery to solve and 5 clues that you have to figure out using different maths. The answer to each clue eliminates some of the suspects. One of the clues involved adding up money to figure out the answer so we got out our play money and recreated the pictures to help us add it up and eliminate some suspects! We did the 5 clues over a couple of days and Vin really enjoyed working them out. We'll definitely print some more of these.

Vin did a bit of practice with writing using punctuation.

We found a cool youtube channel of really elaborate machines that people had made from all sorts of things around their house. Vin thought it was amazing and wants to try and make his own.
We also read the 100 facts around town book again and looked up pictures and videos of some of the world records that were in it. (most ice cream scoops on a single cone! fastest rollercoaster!)

We read the adding with ants book and shapes with snakes. Vin had a bit of fun with the mirror finding some symmetry in the snakes and making them look funny.

We read "Have you seen my dragon" by steve light again and practiced doing some counting in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and talked about which numbers up to 20 were prime numbers.

We found some new exercise videos and had a go at one.
We watched a book on Vooks called "Courageous people who changed the world". There was an activity to print out too. We matched the facts with each person and then Vinnie thought about something he would want to change in the world and how he would go about it. Then drew a picture.

Vin and his dad had a nice time playing with our bargain £1 charity shop find of the 60 in 1 electronics lab! They talked about circuits and tried out some of the activities.

We also played with the code and go robot mouse, we made some elaborate mazes for it and had fun programming him!

It looks like we are going to be busy at home a lot in the next month or two. It is a good opportunity to improve writing practice but also to make the most of the online activities being organised such as fun exercise and stories. It could be a good opportunity to practice talking to people on Skype or the phone too!
