6th - 16th January 2020 Start of a new year

This January we have so far looked at a few different topics. They have mostly been based around Winter.

We found some interesting printouts about why we have different seasons, how the Earth's rotation and the angle it tilts on its axis causes warmer and colder weather at different times of its orbit around the Sun. We filled in some quiz sheets to see what hemisphere we live in and measured the temperature outside where we live.

We played a bird memory matching game I printed off from the RSPB website ages ago that we've played a few times before. It's good to try and recognise birds that we may see where we live.

We went outside to be "Senses Detectives". Looking, listening, feeling, and smelling any signs of Winter. The most obvious one was feeling how COLD it is! We went and played at the playground too of course.

We have been trying to spend a bit of time each week learning about emotions and how our responses to our feelings can have good or bad consequences. This has been a bit of a running theme for some time now though.

We found some pictures on the computer of snowflakes under a microscope. It was fun to see the interesting shapes.

We made an experiment Vinnie got for Christmas - it was a baking soda and vinegar rocket. It went so quickly we couldnt get a picture of it, and it took us quite a few tries to actually figure it out but once we got it to work it was fun to see.

We thought about New Years Resolutions and if there were any new things we'd like to do or to learn about this year. We wrote down some ideas of things we wanted to do more of, less of, and new things we'd find interesting.

As a last Christmas tree themed activity, we printed an activity to decorate Christmas trees with the right sums to equal 10 or not equal 10.

We also had a go at some Number pyramid puzzles. Vin did really well at them once he got over his initial worry that they would be "TOOO HAARRRD"! Remembering to break the sums down into ones and tens and write it out carefully makes all the difference between it being difficult or simple.

We baked a very tasty marble cake together.

Over a few days we built our Christmas present together. A lego pirate themed rollercoaster! Vinnie took some photos of it with his little camera. He's spent a lot of time bringing lots of his different minifigure characters to visit our fun fair!

We went outside and did some drawing with chalk and made a target for our water balloon experiment! It made a big splash!

Vinnie invented a game where we had to throw pinecones at various targets and add up our scores. He chose the numbers 100, 5, 1 and 3 for the targets. He was adding up his score so quickly while running around throwing the pinecones! The jump from 911 to 1011 and then 1111 required a moment's thought but he figured it out.

We made some bird feeders using bird seed and lard stuck to pinecones. We hung several in our garden and a couple in some trees on a path near our house.

We signed up for the 5 day "get active inside" challenge from the "hands on as we grow" website. The first day was an activity to scoot around in a pillowcase. Vin definitely enjoyed doing that! He did ice skating in it too and a sack race. We don't have a lot of space for scooting around but he still had fun.

Vin had an imaginative sort of day where he built a big fort in his room with cushions and blankets and an old plastic tub for a cannon. Then he made a cafe for two of his cuddlies to run and had all his play food and utensils out making different foods for customers.

He's really been enjoying his "Rush Hour" puzzle game that he got for Christmas. It's come out several times over the last week and he has enjoyed puzzling it out (with a bit of occasional cheating and a bit of frustrated rage!).

We printed out a winter song with various winter themed activities from the "fantastic fun and learning website". Vin got some practice snipping out the activity pictures and then we practiced all the movements then had fun picking one at a time out from a bag and singing the song and doing the actions.

Vin did a little bit of handwriting practice from his activity book and a bit of adding to 20 practice from another book. He has also started to colour in some robot sheets I printed out a while ago that combine to make a mix and match book. Each robot can be cut into head, body and legs. Once they're all coloured we can cut them into bits and tie the book together.

We played "doubles bingo". Another printout, this time from peanutbutterfishlessons.com. It was more good scissor practice for Vin too to cut out the sums for calling out. I have another version with different sums too for another day.

We checked on our bird feeders too and took the binoculars to try and spot some birds.
In the afternoon we saw some different kinds of birds - Birds of Prey visited at our home ed group. We saw a Spotted Eagle Owl, a Lanner falcon, a Barn Owl and a Harris Hawk. The trainers told us lots of information about the different types of birds and we saw the Harris Hawk flying.
