24th August - 14th September Summer fun and days out

It has been a while since we updated so we have forgotten quite a few of the things that we have done! Luckily, I took quite a few photos as usual so based on the photos here is what we remember!

We went on a day trip to Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre. We saw chimps, orangutans, woolly monkeys (Vinnie's favourite) and lots of other gibbons and monkeys and lemurs.

We put a string in some super salty solution and watched salt crystals form on it. Then we checked it out under the microscope.

We also did an experiment about evaporation.

Vin has enjoyed doing a few activity books and writing practice and maths. We are still keeping it all pretty informal though as he does seem to just learn so fast when it's the right time for him so we just introduce different things and things come up in day to day life too. He does seem to be enjoying a few more focussed activities too though.

We had a lovely visit to Knole Park to see the deer and play on all the trees.

We went on a bug hunt organised by home ed families with a local entemologist. We learned that grasshoppers have short antenna and eat grass and crickets have long antenna and are omnivores. We saw a wasp spider, various types of flies and dragonflies and shield bugs.

We've played lots of board games.

Vin's drawn some awesome pictures.

We had a great day out to the Bentley Miniature Railway for their Diesel Gala day. Vin always likes to recreate the track layout of any railways he visits!

We did some practice with money using a sheet from the Usborne email newsletter.

We also had some fun with mirrors. We designed a pattern and then experimented with mirrors at different angles. Vin wanted to try out two sets of folded mirrors too.

Vin was super excited to get a Numberblocks comic with the numbers 6-10 to go with his 1-5 blocks. He had a lot of fun doing all the activities in the comic throughout the week. He loves making up his own activities with the blocks too, he counted all the blocks to find that 1 - 10 adds up to 55. He called it the ultimate step squad! He spent a lot of time adding the different characters together and making other ones like in the show. I showed him how easy the nine times table can be by placing the 10 blocks from Numberblock 10 in a row and whatever x9 you want to do you take that block aside and whats on the left of it is the tens and whats on the right is the ones.

We did a bit of "Skittles" maths. We had some skittles sweets for a special treat but we had to earn them before we could eat them! We made a graph of the colours and then assigned "place values" for each colour. That way the skittles represented a number. We practiced some place value questions with them. And added our two numbers together. It helped to see them written down to see how it's not so hard to add big numbers if you just know to add each place one at a time.

We visited a cafe, woodlands, animals and play area at a place called the Kenward Trust. We saw goats, guinea pigs and alpaca and had a fun play.

We've visited several playgrounds over the last month!

Vin's been carrying on with a bit of formal writing practice. It was good to look back on when he first had a go at an activity book and to see how much his control and writing has improved in a couple of years and that practicing more regularly will make it even better!

We visited the Museum of Kent Life and had a lovely time looking at the animals, inspecting the farm machines and exploring the buildings imagining living in them. Vinnie was particularly intrigued by some old scales and scoops in one of the buildings and spent some time trying to balance the sides.
