24th March - 11th April Castles (kind of!) and other things

We had a theme of castles scheduled for April but it kind of fell by the wayside as there were lots of fun Easter themed activities too. We may postpone it until May! We have done lots of nice things though:

We learned to draw The Cat in the Hat


We played the "pop to the shops" game to start learning a bit more about money:


We got some play money, sorted it into the different coins and added up how much money there was in each type of coin.


We made our own shop:


We got some old tyres to play with in the garden:


We used the pokemon book to make a model of a pokemon. Vin chose sandshrew. We worked together to make the different shapes needed to make the model.


We've been doing a bit of maths using a fun activity book:


We transformed the number machine into the Number Castle!


We went on a daytrip to Blackberry farm. We enjoyed seeing all the animals, fed a lamb, and rode the gokarts.


We made a game up, a bit like battleships. We each drew a castle on a grid, then had to put our soldiers on the castle. Then we called out coordinates to try and hit the other persons soldiers.

 This is our last week of the year before we take 3 weeks off for Christmas and New Year. Our week started with something a bit unusual - snow! We went sledging, built a snow gorilla, had snowball fights and of course, as per our theme, built snow castles! Our theme for article of the week this week is all about the lead up to the Age of Exploration. We read about the travels of Marco Polo, the methods used for navigation, the spice trade, and the new ships the Europeans started making in the Middle Ages to help them travel longer distances. We had some more fun with numbers. We practiced more adding and subtracting within 20 and tried out some different methods of making it easier when subtracting such as breaking the number down so you can get to an easier number first then subtract the rest. 28 June - 4 July (week 26)

 A bit of a quieter week this week as we had a few family things to do. We made some lego stop motion videos. We found the youtube channel of the person from the legocon thing we watched last week and got some tips and inspiration. Then we set up our scenes and made our own. We played with lots of lego too, watched some octonauts, played some games.  We went out to a new nature area with some friends and we identified some creatures we found using google lens on the app. We think this guy is a lesser stag beetle. The first 2 strawberries from our garden were ready to eat! We also went to a wedding and Vin had fun playing with some children there.

19 - 25 June 2023 (week 25)

 This week we did some more activities about money. We practiced identifying coins and adding them up. We played Ed and Bunny go shopping. Vinnie filled in an activity sheet with lots of addition and subtraction of money. V read a couple of story books about people saving money and raising money. We also did some white rose maths activities. We did the letterbox lab experiment making a rubber band helicopter. We tried out different things to find out the best balance between size and weight of the helicopter compared to the blades.  Vinnie did some pages from his handwriting book, his comprehension activities book and his spelling practice book.  He drew some lovely fun pictures. He is very inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog at the moment so has drawn some fun scenes with the characters from the games and cartoons. We did some puzzles together.
