2021 29 March - 4 April Week 13
This week Vin got to the pages of the writing book that start to show how to join up letters! He did 3 minutes of writing on each day. He was pleased to start joined up writing.
As lockdown restrictions eased in England, we took the opportunity to go to the seaside. We found interesting things on the beach and drew some of them in our nature journals. We looked up what they were when we got home and found out some interesting facts. We watched the tide change and talked about how the gravity of the moon can affects the tides on Earth. We went to the Dungeness Nature Reserve and looked at the birds and saw some petrified whale bones.
We looked at the guide map for the nature reserve and used it as inspiration to make our own guide map for our local park. We used google maps to get a picture of the park and then made a key and marked the places we thought were good spots at the park. We used our map to take Vin's grandparents on a tour of the park. While we were there we saw lots of moorhens and ducks, and flowers. We drew a couple in our nature journal.
We played Shut the Box and Vin was very pleased he managed to shut the box :-D . We also played with the maths blocks on a couple of days, making fractions and challenging each other to make different fractions or to simplify the fractions.
We read a little leaflet about clovers. We're going to keep our eyes open for clover and see if we can find a four leaf clover!
Vin played Prodigy maths on a few days and has achieved a lot of skills on there now! I've mostly set it to ask "year 2" level things so it practices things he already knows but he has done most of that now so there will be more challenging questions soon.
Vin made a really nice mosaic with the pattern blocks.
We played with the pattern blocks on another day too while talking about equivalent fractions as well as just making shapes with them and adding and subtracting.
We did a few worksheets from Snappy Maths. One about recognising tenths, one of fact families for 5x tables and one with drawing hands on a clock. We did quite a lot of practice with telling the time this week using the clock in the "Usborne . There seem to be a few "sticking points" so we are going over it a lot to try and remember the important facts! We talked about all the different skills you need to be able to read the time on an analogue clock and how it will take time (!) for it to become quick and natural to read but it's a useful skill. I set a lot of time telling questions on prodigy and I could tell Vin was becoming a bit more confident with it after a while.
We sat outside to do a lot of things this week - we are aiming to spend 100 hours outside in Spring. We've managed 10 hours in our first week so we are on track. It was nice to sit outside doing the activities as we got quite a few assistants in the bush next to the patio! We solved the rest of the puzzles from this month's mysteries in time magazine, and made our own telegram. We sent each other some messages in morse code!
We played the pop to the shops board game.
We looked at Vin's Round the World mazes book and looked up lots of the real places on the computer.
We made chocolate cornflake nests and the Easter Bunny very kindly filled them with mini eggs for us :)
