11 June - 16 July - Vikings continued and an odd mish mash of learning stuff

We continued our Viking theme with some fun papercraft models. We cut out and made a Viking Helmet and a Longship. We also looked at 3d models on the computer of a helmet, axe and longship and talked about them.

We printed out and learned to play a board game that was popular during Viking times and could have been an ancestor to modern chess. Hnefatafl!

We printed some activity sheets with Viking runes. We chose Viking names for ourselves and wrote them using the runes. We learned about the Norse gods and had some sheets to decode runes that spelled their names. Vin made up his own Norse god. He is a Jotunn (which are the giants).

We read lots of comics and did puzzles from them.
We watched quite a few of the BBC Bitesize daily 7-9 year olds programs, including ones with poems, decimals, rhythm, the Romans, states of matter (solid, liquid or gas) and did some activities from those. Vin played the Karate Cats maths game on the bitesize website.

We solved the Portrait Gallery maths mystery! We quizzed each other lots with sums and times tables.

Vin has been really into Ninjago and drawing pictures of the characters so he's done a lot of drawing.

He's also been making lots of lego vehicles for his ninjago characters. He made their flying ship the Destiny's Bounty, complete with secret panels. And all sorts of trucks and cars for the bad guys, all with moving bits and secret opening hatches.

We also had a go at magic painting.

Vin made a little peter rabbit dough set he found that he'd got from a comic last year.

Vin enjoyed reading his new Aquila magazine, filling in some of the quiz from the accompanying passport and giant map and was inspired by Japanese manga to make several of his own comics.

We played board games, looked at the globe and the atlas, Vin drew a treasure map.
We collected a load of scraps of wood from a coppicing site and Vin made a goblin village and played pretend.

We set each other times tables and had to gather the answer number of playballs from the paddling pool. Set other maths questions with the answers written in chalk for him to try and hit the correct answer with a water pistol.

We did some more draw-alongs from Steven Lenton.

We've been on several walks around near where we live, Vin noting down interesting things he's seen and taking pictures of some of them and also using his compass to work out which direction certain landmarks are from each other.

We made some little stop motion videos with lego characters.
We started an animal theme Mystery Science topic.
We went on a virtual visit to the Seattle Aquarium, used the downloadable map to follow a route around the aquarium and look at each exhibit and animals on their website and using youtube to find other videos of those animals.
We've also been reading books using the e-library and reading books we already had.

Loads of other things as well, activity books and more drawing, youtube videos and online activities that I keep forgetting to make a note of as we do them!
