27th October - 12th November Spooky halloween and sparkly fireworks
Recently we have tried to get out when it's not been too wet but otherwise we've had some fun activities at home.
We visited the woods to play with some friends

Vin has been enjoying the Anna Hibiscus series about a little girl that lives in a country in Africa. We've been reading those as well as other books about Africa.
We went to a Bridge Engineering workshop organised by the Rochester Bridge Trust. It was held at Tonbridge Castle so it was fun to see inside the castle too. We really enjoyed being told about the history of the bridges at Rochester by the "Spirit of the Bridge", looking around the exhibition, and trying out some bridge engineering for ourselves.

Afterwards Vin played in Tonbridge park with his friends for ages despite the cold!
Vin sent an email to the publisher of a book he liked after finding a secret message in the book, and he received some treasure in the post from the characters!

Vin helped to make a Guy to burn on bonfire night. He sewed up the ends of the legs, stuffed it with newspapers and drew a creepy zombie face!

We did some autumn leaves sudoku puzzles.

We enjoyed our bonfire party with a fire, fireworks, sparklers and hot dogs!

We got some nylon thread and finished our marionettes!

Vin was inspired by the new Lego Hidden Side sets. He made his own spooky hotel. It has a monster face for the door, complete with a red tongue and green dripping slime, a big table and benches ,and a 4 poster bed with canopy.

Vin had a cardboard bat to decorate for halloween. He wanted it to be rainbow patterned so I printed out a load of rainbow pictures for him to cut out and glue on.

We borrowed a new story sack - Room on the Broom! A nice witchy themed one for halloween. We read the story together with the toys, then played with them and acted out our own stories. Vin did the jigsaw puzzle. We answered the quiz questions included in the sack, spotted verbs in the story and came up with alternatives. We thought of different words we could use in the story that still rhymed. Vin came up with the idea to design our own wands and broomsticks. He also drew some ingredients for the witches spell.

I printed out some dot to dot pictures that counted in 2s and 5s instead of 1. Vin enjoyed doing them and colouring them in.

We read about Guy Fawkes and bonfire night. Vin remembered a lot of information about it that he told daddy about at bedtime!
We made playdough letters and some numbers. Then Vin decided to make sums with them.

Vin made a cute picnic for some cuddlies - complete with invitations, marbles divided up for them to eat and lego brick separators for carrots!

We visited Scotney castle. We spotted some great fungi, admired the Autumn colours, read books in the second hand book store, spoke to some people that work in the house, did a bit of map reading, and ate cake!

We read a book called "you're called What?!" by Kes Gray. It was about real animals with funny names. We made up our own funny animals and came up with a name for them and then described them and thought up some adjectives.

We visited the Sevenoaks Wildfowl Reserve. We had a nice walk around, watched some birds from one of the hides and then had a look at the exhibition. Vin liked looking at the bones and all the displays with stuffed animals.

For remembrance day we read a little bit about World War I and the origin of Armistice day, and read about when and why the poppies were first made and sold. We looked at a very zoomed in picture of a poppy from the Explorify website. I didn't tell Vinnie what it was a picture of so he had to guess. he changed his mind every time it zoomed out a little bit! A cake, a flower, a red pepper, a rose, POPPIES!
Vin did a writing practice sheet which he decorated with a field of poppies and crosses. He also made a bookmark.

Vin made more fun lego creations, he seems very inspired at the moment! He made a lego police station, with jail cell, office area, kennel, car park and - of course- a jet ski launch !

He also made a display of fruits and vegetables!

Then he transformed his police station into a hideout for Rex Fury (from the game lego city undercover). It had a lookout point, warehouse, tv and sofa room. And not-very-subtly had the name Rex in huge lego letters at the front!

We played a view-master board game called Klomp-it (I love view-master reels!)

We looked at pictures and talked about Mercury passing in front of the sun.
We read and did activities from some old Go Jetters comics we hadnt finished. Learning about landmarks from around the world and looking up pictures of them on the computer.

We borrowed another lovely story sack called "Fatou fetch the water" about a girl living in the Gambia. It was interesting to see in what ways her life was similar or different from the girl in the Anna Hibiscus stories. We learned a bit about The Gambia, read the story and acted it out with the toys, Vin then wanted to play with the pieces and he actually re-enacted the whole story from memory in the right order! Then we played the board game included in the bag.

Apart from this there has been lots of playing, lego, stories, more board games. Vin told me he'd read somewhere about some families that travel the world doing "World schooling". He decided to make one of his lego sets that has a caravan and family travel around to different places and he likes to choose things for them to go on tours to and visit! They seem to end up in a lot of interesting situations (visiting the villainous Rex Fury's hideout was a mistake they will not repeat!).
