Vin's Learning Journey

 Vin did some activities for Chinese New year at the start of this month. He read about China on the Oddizzi website and then typed some facts. He also made a cool Chinese dragon puppet. Vin has done lots of work on his Doodlemaths program and learned some new maths concepts. He does some of this every day. Vin is continuing to work through his writing activities book and his Mrs wordsmith activity book learning about grammar. He also wrote out a story and wrote out something he was grateful for in his little book for each day of February . He has also done some pages from some science activity books and Spanish books. We attended an art and social group and Vin enjoyed making some pictures. Vin went bowling and to the park with a friend.  At forest school, Vin made a bird feeder, helping to light the fire and melt the lard to stick the seeds to pine cones and then tie them to a mobile like arrangement.  Vinnie has been spending more time recently doing activities from his books so there hasn't been much to photograph. We might update monthly rather than weekly from now on as he is doing more 'academic' type things.  He has been doing well with his doodlemaths program on the computer, we're working on making it a habit to consistently use so that is most of the maths he is currently doing, although we have played some games together to practice . Vin's really been enjoying drawing a picture every day for January. He made up a list of words for February so he can continue being inspired to do a picture each day.  Vin has also been doing activities from his writing and english books as well as some writing a short story. We practiced some grammar and Vinnie has made a couple of posters illustrating various concepts!  We practiced some Spanish vocabulary with a sticker book and Vin drew a picture and labelled some of the clothes.  For maths this week learned about the properties of prisms, Vin did his Doodlemaths app quizzes, we looked at our 3D shapes and identified which were prisms. Vinnie made a poster of them and drew and labelled the shapes. We read about past and present tense and how verbs change. Vin had a go at some activities rewriting sentences in the different tenses. We practiced counting from 1 to 10 in Spanish and challenged each other with simple adding and subtracting questions.   We went for a nice walk to make the most of the sunshine. Vinnie learned about pyramids and polygons on Doodlemaths and did lots of his practice questions. We looked at a science book and had a recap about the parts of a plant. Vinnie filled in his science worksheets book. We had a recap about the topics we learned about last year about writing. Then Vinnie did some more practice filling in a report about alpacas.  We enjoyed watching the final Physics in Advent videos. We looked at lovely lights and decorations while seeing Scotney castle decorated in the style it might have looked in the 1960s. Vinnie made biscotti with his dad. He helped weigh out ingredients as well as mixing them and shaping them for baking. Vin had fun experimenting with his mag lev kit. He’s had it for a while but hasn’t used it for some time so it was nice to rediscover. Vin got a fun electronic circuits kit for Christmas and had a nice time on a few occasions making an assortment of the creations from it. Vin made a musical instrument ;) He drew lots of cool pictures. We looked at a Tudor and Victorian Christmas at Ightham mote. Vin went to forest school and built a cool den.

 We spotted 2D shapes and Vin drew a pattern for a bee hotel with a specific number of triangles, rectangles and pentagons. Then we spotted right angles and parallel lines. We put on some Christmas songs and made some festive perler beads crafts. Vinnie also made a lot of cute mario kart bead art! We watched more of the physics in advent experiments and made predictions of what we thought may happen. Vin played some kahoot to practice his times tables. We did the penultimate lesson in the mystery science theme. It was about the causes of - and how we could protect a town from - landslides. We went to the museum and looked at some of the toys exhibits they have. Then Vinnie made some of his own old fashioned toys. Vin solved a maths mystery to figure out which cheeky elf ate mrs Claus’ Christmas cake. He had to answer a lot of different puzzles to rule out all the suspects. Vin made a board game. We went for a Christmassy walk around knole park and spotted the ‘12 days of Christmas’...

 We played a board game with lots of division practice. We had a go at the Google coding dancing elves game. We watched some physics experiments on the physics advent calendar and tried to predict what we thought may happen. (We watched the first few in German before realising there was an English option so a bit of foreign language practice too!) We did the next mystery science activity called ‘ what did your town look like 100 million years ago?’. We saw how layers of sediment build up over millions of years and compress into different types of rock. We watched some cute videos of water voles and did some maths puzzles about lengths of blade of grass eaten in certain amounts of time. Vin had a good try at some tricky time telling puzzles figuring out the time things started or finished or how long they took based on information given in the little stories.
